EMA funding is to help you continue in learning. It’s means tested if you remain in full time education, but if you go onto e2e you qualify automatically.
Going to college - do you qualify?
You can apply for
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)- If you are 16, 17 or 18 and in or about to leave or have already left education and are thinking of starting a full time further education course at college or school; and
- Your household income is below £30,810.
How much you might get will depend on your household income - the income thresholds for the current academic year are as follows:
- Up to £20,817 for the weekly £30 EMA
- £20,818 - £25,521 for the weekly £20 EMA
- £25,522 - £30,810 for the weekly £10 EMA
If you qualify the weekly payment will be paid directly into your bank account. You would normally get an EMA for two years, assuming that your household income does not rise above £30,810. The EMA could be paid for three years, if you require extra time to fulfill your potential.
You could also get bonus payments; these could be worth up to £500.00 if your learning programme lasts for two years.
Going onto e2e?
Anyone who goes onto e2e can claim the full amount of EMA for the time that they’re on e2e.
How to apply
If you are considering going to college in September, you should get an EMA application pack from your school at Easter, and complete the application form – DON'T wait until you’ve got a college place confirmed before you apply. If you are planning to go onto e2e apply for EMA as soon as possible – don’t wait until you start.
You can register on line at EMA for an application pack.
Or you can contact the EMA Student Helpline 0808 121 8989; lines are open Monday to Friday 7.00am to 8.00pm.
To get an EMA you need to have
a bank account before you apply as you'll need to give your bank details on your EMA.

You can use the library in your Connexions Centre too as it has information for you to read or take away.
